Probably only interesting to me

Met Office: What's causing the cold weather?.

An interesting press-release from the UK Meteorological Office, on what is causing the current spell of colder than average weather conditions (reported in the media as the COLD WEATHER CRISIS).

But most interesting, is the second chart on the page, that shows global temperature differential from the long term average. This shows that the UK is 2-5ºC colder than average — but that Canada and the eastern Mediterranean are about 10ºC warmer than average! Very few areas of the globe were at the average, but then again, that would be why it is called an average.

The final point I noticed on this press-release was

December was one of only two months in 2009 which had a below-average mean temperature.

Not sure if this was UK or global mean, but it does tend to suggest the world is still warming, despite this temporary localised cold interlude (that is not a crisis).
