The Trees of Life
“Winter: Doorway through Death (Yew)”

DOORWAY THROUGH DEATH uses images drawn from the Yew: trunk, branches, leaves, and berry. Yew is the tree most commonly associated with death in all European countries. It is placed in the Celtic calendar at the darkest time of the year, the winter solstice. For Celts, death was not an end, but a doorway to another life. Yew lives for thousands of years, regenerating itself as its branches root in the ground to form new trunks. This gives yew a reputation for immortality and makes it a symbol of rebirth and transformation.
